Marlene Houghton and Rob Eykelbeysh are self-imposed refugees from the cold winters of Canada. These seasoned travellers are also avid scuba divers who enjoy interesting people, a nice meal and a spectacular view. When they made the decision to semi-retire to Belize, Ambergris Caye was a natural fit.
For years Mar dreamed of owning a little coffee shop in the Caribbean, where all too often she had struggled to find a really great latte or delicious scone. In Rob, she found a willing accomplice and partner. He brought expertise from his former professional life to the innovative construction of the property.
However, it wasn’t long after breaking ground in June of 2014 the realization hit that sourcing quality materials would be a challenge. So, in the months that followed, they took the opportunity to travel to the to mainland Belize and even Mexico and Guatemala in search of distinctive design elements. Guests often remark how surprised they are to find such luxe interiors and finishes given the casual nature of the island. But for anyone who knows this pair, attention to detail comes as no surprise.
If she’s not baking, Mar is likely at Pilates or yoga and Rob rarely passes up a chance to get out on the water. But most afternoons they simply enjoy island life… walking Tony and Molly on the beach or enjoying a cold beer or glass of wine on the patio with friends. For these two, playing host is second nature and whether it’s a phenomenal dive spot or just a really great meal, they know exactly where to send guests.
Our goal was to build something completely unique. Daydreamin’ is exactly where we would want to stay… and bring friends with us time and again.
